Lübeck Evening Concerts
Every year at the change of the church year, musicians perform the Lübeck Evening Concerts ("Lübecker Abendmusiken") in St Marien under the direction of the Marienorganist. These evening concerts date back to a tradition that was probably established by the Marienorganist Franz Tunder in the 17th century.
The exact origin of the evening concerts remains unclear. Franz Tunder, as the possible founder, began with organ music and later expanded the range of instruments. Buxtehude placed the evening concerts at the change of the church year, thus giving them new meaning. Very little of Buxtehude's evening concerts has survived.
The evening concerts were continued by Buxtehude's successors until 1810. In the late 19th century, Karl Lichtwark reintroduced organ music with vocal and instrumental contributions. From 1929 onwards, Walter Kraft renamed these concerts "Lübeck Evening Concerts". Today, under the direction of Marienorganist Johannes Unger, they are continued at the change of the church year with new and old music in a wide variety of ensembles.
