Every year at the turn of the church year, musicians perform the Lübeck Evening Music ("Abendmusiken") in St. Marien under the direction of the Marienorganist. This evening music goes back to a tradition that was probably founded by St Marien's organist Franz Tunder in the 17th century.
The exact origin of the Abendmusiken is a mystery. Franz Tunder, the possible founder, began with organ music and later expanded the range of instruments. Buxtehude placed the Abendmusiken at the time of the change of church year and thus gave them a new meaning. Very little of Buxtehude's Abendmusiken has survived.
Buxtehude's successors continued to perform the Abendmusiken until 1810. In the late 19th century, Karl Lichtwark reintroduced organ music with vocal and instrumental contributions. Walter Kraft called these concerts "Lübeck Evening Music" again from 1929. Today they are continued under St Marien's organist Johannes Unger at the turn of the church year with new and old music in a wide variety of instrumentations.
