Johannes Unger
Organist at St Marien and Dom zu Lübeck
A passionate musician
Johannes Unger (*1976) has been organist at St Marien since 2009 and at Dom zu Lübeck (Lübeck Cathedral) since 2022.
He grew up in a musical family and studied piano, organ and church music in Leipzig and Copenhagen. His teachers included Ullrich Böhme, Hans Fagius and Markus Tomas. From 2003 to 2009, he was assistant organist at the famous Thomaskirche (St Thomas' Church) in Leipzig. He attracted international attention when he won three major organ competitions within a short space of time (Odense 1998, Leipzig Bach Competition 2000 and St Albans 2001).
His main duties include concert and liturgical organ playing at St Marien in Lübeck. He also directs the "Capella St. Marien", a choral and instrumental ensemble that he founded in 2010. In 2010, he composed the "Beatitudes" for 2 organs, bass and women's choir for the "Lübeck Evening Music" in memory of the Lübeck martyrs.
Since 2010, he has dedicated the annual "Buxtehude Days" in St Marien to his famous predecessor Dieterich Buxtehude.
Concerts and courses have taken Johannes Unger to many European countries, North America and Australia. He regularly makes recordings for radio and on CD. He taught at the University of Church Music in Halle until 2009. In 2009 he received a teaching position at the Lübeck University of Music.
