Carillon

Reliable companion throughout the day

In and around the Old Town: Singing through the church year with various chorales.

Carillon

You can hear it all over the old town and sometimes even further: The carillon chimes a chorale every half (half chorale) and full hour (full chorale). At 8 am, 12 noon and 6 pm the chorales sound in several voices. From 10 pm to 6 am, the carillon is silent.

One of the tasks of St Marien's organist is to play two-part chorales live on the carillon via a keyboard ("Carillon") three times a year: On Easter Sunday, Whitsunday and Christmas Day.

The carillon with its 36 bells (c sharp' to c'''') originally comes from St Catherine's Church in Gdansk. It was restored in 1953 and installed in the south tower of St Marien in Lübeck. The largest bell (c') was only added in 2019. The old carillon in the ridge turret of St Mary's was destroyed on the night of the Palm Sunday bombing in 1942.
