Choirs and Ensembles

Something for everyone

Various choirs and ensembles await you at St Marien. Will we see you at a concert?

The Lübeck Boys' Choir at St Marien ("Lübecker Knabenkantorei")

Every year, thousands of listeners attend the traditional Christmas carol singing during Advent. However, the singers are also involved in many church services and special events in the church during the rest of the church year. Another highlight is the annual performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's St John Passion on Good Friday.

The Lübeck Boys' Choir was founded in 1948. St Marien has been its musical home since 1971. It has around 100 singers in various groups, 60 of whom are in the concert choir. The repertoire includes sacred choral music from all eras of the European musical tradition. A particular focus is on the works of the Lübeck Baroque master Dieterich Buxtehude.

The choir rehearses several times a week in the rehearsal centre in the heart of Lübeck's old town, which is donated and maintained by the non-profit association. The choir also receives support from St Marien's parish and the Friends and Sponsors of the choir.

Detailed information and all concert dates can be found on the Lübeck Boys' Choir website:

Capella St Marien

In 2010, St Mary's organist Johannes Unger founded the Capella St Marien ensemble, which performs under his direction. It consists of around 30 singers and instrumentalists. The ensemble can be heard in project-related work in church services and concerts, during the annual Buxtehude Days and the Lübeck Evening Music in St Marien. The Capella St Marien has already performed works by Tunder, Buxtehude, Bach, Vierne, Latry, Liszt, Karg-Elert and Unger.

Capella St Marien is looking for singers of all voice groups with choral experience and vocal training.

MarienBrass

The NDR Brass ensemble and St Marien's organist Johannes Unger have been working together successfully since 2013.

The desire for continuous collaboration with the NDR musicians gave rise to the idea of something new.

Constantin Ribbentrop and Johannes Unger initiated the MarienBrass ensemble in 2015, which is dedicated to the unique musical tradition of St Marien with its famous composers Buxtehude and Tunder in addition to the usual literature.

Etwas ist im Werden

I really enjoy singing in the Capella. The varied repertoire and the development from the first musical text to a polyphonic performance fascinate me anew with every piece.
